Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
